Our History

Central Baptist Church was founded on March 4, 1900, as an outgrowth of First Baptist Church of Florence. Under the leadership of Rev. W.S. Brown, Rev. Richard Hall, and other faithful members, the church was formally established and began its ministry in the Florence community.

In April 1919, the congregation purchased a lot and relocated from East Florence Baptist Church, adopting the name Central Baptist Church. The church continued to grow, and in 1950 construction began on a new Educational Building — 86 feet long and 45 feet wide — completed at a cost of $40,000. Tragically, that building was destroyed by fire on March 21, 1954.

Undeterred, the congregation rallied. In January 1955, the church launched its most extensive building program to date, breaking ground on April 1, 1956 in the Eastwood Subdivision. By June 1957, a beautiful new $175,000 sanctuary was completed. The church faced further trials in January 1965 when fires damaged both the educational building and an adjacent facility, but repairs and restoration were completed by July 1966 at a cost of over $153,000.

In April 1973, the church entered a new season of outreach-focused ministry. Over the decades since, Central Baptist has remained committed to its mission — reaching the community with the gospel, discipling believers, and serving those in need. Today, we continue that legacy with the same faith and determination that has carried this church for over 125 years.
